TOY PRODUCTION
Our Smilemakers don't make
these toys because they benefit from it - they do it to help people.
Although they do enjoy making the toys themselves (a bunch of retired men
and their power tools - why wouldn't they like it?), the best part is seeing
the smile on a child's face and knowing that they have done some good in
this world. |
 |
Russ & Mary didn't need to
be asked, they jumped at the chance to participate. Their enthusiasm is
contagious and, Mary warns, "smile making is addictive." "I know when I need
to get going," she says, "I'll find a pile of wood in my dining room that
has my name on it." After Mary traces the cars outline, Russ cuts out the
individual cars. He has already made thousands and will probably hit a
million before he quits. |

Giving is nothing new to
Leonard & Agnes, so assembling and staining cars for TFGK came naturally.
"We like to volunteer," says Leonard, "and this is more fun than changing
bedpans." The work is a family effort as their daughter Terri has
distributed thousands of toys to Israel, India, Brazil, Egypt, Congo,
Burundi and Mexico. A nephew also helps by supplying wood and other materials
from his lumber yard. For them, it's a great cause and "how could you not
help when you see those smiling faces." |
 |
| Volunteering, and
then some, are a way of life for Bill & Barb.
They not only have a toy shop in their backyard,
they're also involved with the Phantastic Phoenician toy
makers in Phoenix. They promote Toy's for
God's Kids through their involvement with Miss
Wheelchair America and the
Looking Glass Corvette Association. They
hand out cars to kids attending the Corvette
Rallies, parades, pageants and any other
conceivable public venue that makes them
welcome including Wilderness on
Wheels, just outside of Bailey, CO,
which hands out toy cars to all of the disabled
children that frequent this accessible
wilderness area. |
